Gundam RX-78 機動戦士ガンダム (odaiba)

Posted by
timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 30 June 2009 in Art & Design.

At 18m (59 feet) tall and weighing in at some 43 tons, the 1:1 scale model of a Gundam RX-78 is a sight to see, even for those (like me) who know nothing about giant-sized robots from Japanese manga/anime. Hell, at dusk when starts emanating ominous sounds, lights up, and its head starts scanning the horizon, this pseudo-automaton completely brings out my raw Y-chromosome Tim Allen-style grunt. Now if only Mitsubishi or Hitachi came up with a functional model...I'd love to see if, on the last day, the jetpack on this baby lit up and the whole thing flew away.

(Experience it for yourself at Tokyo's Odaiba--or wait for some more photos!)
