Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan Grand Mosque (Abu Dhabi)

The Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan Grand Mosque: the world’s sixth largest (as of 3/2009) mosque. From the highway, its 9 large alabaster domes (and 39 smaller ones) seem as lone puffs of clouds upon the horizon; as we got closer, those puffs of white turned into brilliant domes and spires of marble rising from the desert. Truly a marvel. We continued to drive around the perimeter, looking for a way in--the mosque closes at noon to all non-Muslims, and with the clock ticking I grew nervous as each entrance we passed by was closed. Gated. Shut.
