shira-ito waterfall 白糸の滝 (Yamanashi)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 2 November 2009 in Landscape & Rural. If you Google "Shiraito Waterfall", you'll receive two main sets of results: One for the waterfall in Shizuoka (which seems absolutely stunning) and one for a waterfall of the same name, in Yamanashi (shown here). I had made the mistake of driving some 2 hours to see this gem in the wilderness--and, the Japanese name is quite fitting, as it means "White-thread Falls". Nice as it may be, it wasn't the spectacular waterfall with the same name, but apparently in the adjacent prefecture--which looks like a smaller version of Niagara Falls, but offering a view of Mt. Fuji. Although I was a bit disappointed in having visited the wrong waterfall, I was nevertheless content with the excellent scenery along the way--and was treated to a lovely Autumn landscape just the same. - - - - - In Google Maps >>
