beautiful seaside rocks (niijima)

Niijima seems, essentially, to have two faces: the serene seas along the western curve of the island (Maehama Beach), and the big waves of the eastern (Habushi Beach).

It's here near this giant rock of an island where many families seem either to split up--with dad waving a "bye-bye" to mom and child, going off to meet the whitecaps while they make sandcastles--or rejoin each other, meeting at the open-air public hot bath (onsen; to the right center of the photo, near the Greek-esque structure) and relax after a long day.
