Koinobori Streamers 鯉のぼり (Sagamihara)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 22 May 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture. The Sagami Giant Kite Festival is known not only for its trademark ginormous kites, but for its amazingly long line of koinobori (literally "carp banner"). Representing young fish swimming vibrantly- -a visual analogy to the expectations of parents with young children- -koinobori are seen during Tango no Sekku, or Children's Day (May 5). As the breeze begins to blow, these colorful windsocks begin to rise and convincingly "swim" about in the air--such a wonderful, soothing sight.
