Sagami Giant Kite Festival 大凧まつり (Sagamihara)

Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 20 May 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture.

Held annually on May 3 - 4 along the banks of the Sagami River in southwestern Kanagawa Prefecture, the Giant Kite Festival is quite something to behold, and a matsuri that I had for a long time wanted to see.

Weighing in at some 900 kilograms (roughly a ton), these giant kites are said to be Japan's largest; in seeing their massive sizes--and witness to their requiring a fairly large team to help launch the kites (and a bulldozer to serve as an anchor point), I thoroughly believe that claim.
