penis mikoshi 金まら祭り (kawasaki, japan)

It was my first trip to the “penis festival” in Kawasaki, and I had little idea of what to expect. I knew that there would be phallic symbols strewn about, but I suppose that I wasn’t quite ready for how literal these symbols would be. For a nation that seems rather prudish about sex (though perhaps not as much so as America), it’s quite something else to see heaps of people gathering around to see a large pink phallus be toted around town, as though it were just any other mikoshi.
