Eiheiji Temple (Fukui Prefecture) is a truly impressive series of all-wood constructions, interconnected by quiet stairways that follow the contours of the land. Indeed, the overall architectural aura of this key Soto Zen temple not only seems to incorporate the school's signature philosophy of "silent illumination" (shikantaza), but seems to make visitors tacitly aware of it as well.
