ice sculpture 明治神宮の氷像 (harajuku, japan)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 14 January 2009 in Art & Design. An ice sculpture exhibition was held at Harajuku's Meiji Shrine this past weekend, as a part of the area's Snow Festival; approximately 30 works from different artists (both professional and amateur) were shown. I actually came across the beginning of the festival on Saturday eve, when I happened upon a number of unattended blocks of ice along the same entrance to the shrine; with burning curiosity I walked around until I found someone who looked as though he had some sort of connection with the event. He explained that this was an annual event, and that the artists would begin carving the ice around 7pm that evening, and go through 'til around 8am the next morning. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
