nagano snowscape 長野雪景色 (nagano, japan)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 8 January 2009 in Landscape & Rural. Taken on the slopes at Kitashiga Kogen Komaruyama (北志賀小丸山スキー場). Every weekend I try to venture outside of Tokyo in an attempt to discover something new. This past weekend, one of my friends invited me to accompany her and her friends on a jaunt to Nagano for a little snowboarding (or, for me, short-skiing. I think I lack the requisite coordination for snowboarding, and I somewhat loathe regular skis.). As soon as I stepped off the bus and inhaled the air I realized: there was no taste whatsoever of pollution; and while it may seem trite to say, the mountain air was the crispest, most delectable air I have had the pleasure of breathing in a long time. The landscape merely added to the delight of skiing. Each time the quiet lifts took me up the side of the mountain, with childlike eyes I marveled at the sheer beauty of the landscape: placid peaks with snowcovered trees at the summits above; and, in the distance, the sharp, whitecapped, jagged sawtooth of the Japan Alps. Amazing.
