Chinatown temple 中華街寺 (yokohama, japan)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 4 January 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture. People at the famous temple, Kanteibyo (or 关帝庙, Guan Gong Temple) in Yokohama's Chinatown. Located near the heart of Chinatown, Kanteibyo has an interesting story. While originally founded in 1861 as a temple for numbers of Chinese migrants who went to Yokohama, it had been destroyed and rebuilt several times (most recently in 1986)--a true testament to the resolve of people to maintain part of their culture in a foreign land. Access: 5 minutes' walk from the Chukagai exit of JR Ishikawacho Station on the Negishi/Keihin Tohoku line.
