asakusa daruma 浅草の達磨 (asakusa, japan)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 1 January 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture. Daruma (the little red figurines) are traditional Japanese good luck charms and are often found sold at temples (at this case, at Asakusa's Sensoji Temple) around the new year. (They can be a little unnerving as they come without eyes painted on them; as tradition goes, you make a wish and paint one of the eyes--when it comes true, you paint the other one in and the wish will stay true forever.)
