Bell on Lovers' Hill 恋人の丘(龍恋の鐘) (kamakura, japan)

most tourist places in japan have some kind of special action associated with them: at Amanohashidate, for instance, the thing to do is to look between your legs while standing and view the thin peninsula. Other places have a special food or drink, certain words to say, or just something to think about while standing there in that moment.

Enoshima is no exception. Many people come to the island to enjoy the views of Mt. Fuji, onsen bath, or the soothing sea air, as part of their visit to Kamakura.

Many couples, however, end up at this spot: the bell on lovers' hill. To the left of the dragon cave (and before going down to the cliff walk), you would see a small, plain-looking offering box where you can purchase a lock; adjacent to this is a small path that seems to lead nowhere. Couples would purchase a lock and write their names on it--then walk down the path to this bell, "lock" their eternal love to any of the low fences in the area, and ring this bell for good fortune: that they would never part. (A lovely image for New Year's, ne?)
