umbrellas and torii 傘と鳥居 (nikko, japan)

Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 9 December 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

As the frigid drizzle again started flicking against our umbrellas, a herd of tourists exiting underneath the billowing boughs of ages-old cedar and Toshogu’s giant torii gate caught my eye; for half a second I fought to stabilize my umbrella for the shot--perilously perching the crook on my shoulder and trying to balance the handle on my hip as I angled my hands and head.
Perhaps you found the preceding description as difficult to imagine as it was for me to do--and in a flurry I gave up. I dropped the umbrella, sacrificing my camera to the quiet might of raindrops for a few moments, and snapped this shot--just as the tour group made it into the center of what I wanted to shoot.
Voila!
Ah what comic contortionists camerapersons can be...
