asakusa is one of the older towns on the eastern side of tokyo; as it has managed to retain much of its older culture (mainly evidenced by a few older-style buildings and a lot of pubs, temples, and shops selling traditional things), it is known in japanese as a shitamachi (下町) area -- the "old downtown". accordingly, it's wildly popular with tourists who want to see that "old japan" style even in the modern megalopolis.
