fire mikoshi 火の神輿 (gifu, japan)

when all the lanterns are lit, giant sparklers are lit, raining down fire. one by one, the mikoshi parade through the fire, which in turn lights a huge sparkler atop the mikoshi; dancing through this conflagration, the festival participants gong old brass fire bells (which may have been used ages ago to warn villagers of fire). truly a spectacle.
