fire mikoshi 火の神輿 (gifu, japan)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 16 August 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture. when all the lanterns are lit, giant sparklers are lit, raining down fire. one by one, the mikoshi parade through the fire, which in turn lights a huge sparkler atop the mikoshi; dancing through this conflagration, the festival participants gong old brass fire bells (which may have been used ages ago to warn villagers of fire). truly a spectacle.
