matsuri night 祭のナイト (tsukishima, tokyo)Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 8 August 2008 in Cityscape & Urban. at this tsukishima festival, four giant wooden poles, for holding massive banners (shown here), are buried in the banks of the sumida river, then ceremoniously raised every three years. i particularly enjoy seeing these kinds of festivals, seeing how a more traditional way of life contrasts--and yet melds--with the modern; of how even in the large city, there are these wonderful, quaint neighborhoods each with their own centuries-old traditions.
