matsuri night 祭のナイト (tsukishima, tokyo)

at this tsukishima festival, four giant wooden poles, for holding massive banners (shown here), are buried in the banks of the sumida river, then ceremoniously raised every three years.

i particularly enjoy seeing these kinds of festivals, seeing how a more traditional way of life contrasts--and yet melds--with the modern; of how even in the large city, there are these wonderful, quaint neighborhoods each with their own centuries-old traditions.
