torii gate 宮島の鳥居 (miajima, japan)

Posted by timothy sullivan (Tokyo, Japan) on 22 January 2008 in Art & Design.

A short train and ferry (both covered by the JR Rail Pass for foreign tourists--if you come to Japan, definitely invest in one!) from Hiroshima City is Miajima--home to this quite famous and beautiful scene: the floating torii (shown with person for scale). The view from this location, particularly at sunset, is absolutely stunning--little wonder why it's so often photographed. Simply a must-do for any visitor to Japan.
Also, as you take the ferry from the shore, look off to the surrounding waters and you'll see heaps of markers showing where oysters are being cultured. Oysters are Hiroshima City's major culinary delight; if you've never tried them anywhere else, definitely have them here.
