headless relic 首なし遺物 (angkor wat, cambodia)

As we were leaving Angkor Wat for Angkor Thom, my friends and I passed this vagabond fellow by; I paused and watched curiously as he examined this ancient statue with his hands--in a way that made me wonder whether he was half-blind or merely ascertaining every texture of the worn surface. Something about his posture and pose invoked within me a pang of something melancholy.
